Chocolate covered Strawberry – Crispy Crepe

Crepe must be pretty popular here in Charlotte. Miles apart there’s the Hazelnut Creperie at uptown, Crepe Cellar at NoDa, and Crispy Crepe at South End. Luckily, I have been to all 3 stores my 6 months in Charlotte. I love crepe, and I especially cannot resist the delicious nutella strawberry / banana dessert crepe. To me, everyday’s a good day for nutella strawberry or nutella banana crepe 🙂

Crispy Crepe is within walking distance from my apartment. I’ve been wanting to try this place for awhile but never had the chance to because the store hour is a bit strange. Finally had the chance to try it the weekend of snow when walking was much safer than driving.

The location of Crispy Crepe is fairly convenient at South End where lots of apartment complexes and dining options are located at. I do not remember seeing parking lot available for this place, so if you are within walking distance, I highly suggest walking… It’s nice to eat all the good food and then have mini free work out session to burn some of the calories right? #makesense

It is not difficult to spot Crispy Crepe. The logo is a chocolate covered strawberry, hence the title of my post. Large windows, plenty of seating options, and even on a snowy Sunday there were a lot of people eating brunch there! To me, that’s saying something about this restaurant, and I was excited!

Interior design was not the most ‘French’ style I’ve seen in a crepe store, but it was nice, bright, and welcoming. I especially like how the team strategically painted blue window frames by the TV to create an atmosphere! I know we are still in Charlotte, but the painted windows do make you feel like you want to escape somewhere for a mini vacation, or rather, the fact eating at Crispy Crepe already feels like a delicious trip away from the Queen city.

Don’t worry if you are not a super crepe person because the menu offers a lot of choices – from sandwich to omelette, savory crepe to dessert crepe, main course…. and even Belgian waffles! I know I’ve mentioned it a couple of times before, I am super indecisive so it took me a little while to decide on what I want as my first time here at Crispy Crepe.

Are you like me? Who sort of has this strange thing not wanting to have savory and dessert crepe in one meal? (It just feels like that would be too much crepe for me… :P)

In the end, I settled for the bacon, cheese, and egg savory crepe with a side of potato au gratin…. and the Crispy Crepe (with a strawberry) recommendation of the peanut butter and custard Belgian waffle as dessert. Usually I like to stick to what I always order, so it was super close for me to go with the nutella strawberry Belgian waffles. Thanks to A.’s suggestion to try something new… It was indescribably delicious (mouth-watering just thinking about it :P)

Warmly prepared savory crepe. Nothing unexpected – good bacon, cheese, and egg. I was surprised by the potato au gratin though. I didn’t expect it would taste so good as a complimentary side! Highly recommend to get this as your side at Crispy Crepe. You won’t be disappoint 🙂

Peanut butter & Custard Belgian waffles

There was a big grin on my face when the waitress brought out the dessert. I mean, just look at it. How delightful is that? Warm Belgian waffles covered in homemade peanut butter sauce and cream custard? Oh… and peanut butter crumbles!

According to Crispy Crepe’s menu description:

“We make our delicious Liège waffles in the European tradition. Our pastry dough is a labor of love made daily. The sweet dough is studded with imported Belgian pearl sugar nuggets that caramelize into the dense twice risen dough when crushed in our heavy cast iron waffle press”

Looks yummy? Guaranteed yumminess! I am a huge dessert person and I’ve had very good Belgian waffles before, but this place would make me want to come back again and again just for that waffles. (I wish I can have one right now… Postmates delivery?)

Crispy Crepe is delicious, and the staffs were friendly. However, do prepare it’s not going to be a cheap meal as everything’s above $10+, which is probably why it’s ranked below Hazelnut Creperie on Yelp due to pricing. Do not let the price tag scare you away though. I think this place will not disappoint you, and you’ll have a high chance of falling in love to one of their items… like me.

Everyday’s a good day for some nutella sweets, are you with me?

hungry k.
